With so many bugs going around lately, I thought I'd make some elderberry syrup. Homemade elderberry syrup's a great natural and effective alternative to various medications, and at $15+ for a small bottle of elderberry syrup at the store, it's also a lot less expensive! You can definitely make much more for less, and you can make yours even better by using local, raw honey. With their high Vitamin A, B, and C content, elderberries can stimulate the immune system, helping prevent illness as well as help you have a speedy recovery.

This elderberry syrup's super easy to make too! Just simmer the materials until you've got a nice infusion, then concentrate it by letting some water evaporate off. Let it cool a bit (so you don't "cook" your raw honey) and mix it into the honey. Stir a spoonful into tea or just take it undiluted. Your immune system will thank you! :)

Note: this elderberry syrup will be thinner than most storebought versions because there aren't additives to thicken it. If you'd prefer a thicker syrup, you could mix in a little gelatin to help thicken it. Or use a bit more and make some gummies. :)

What are some natural or alternative methods you use to keep yourself healthy?

    1. Thanks for stopping by! I have heard it will last 6 months, but I haven't tested it. I tend to make a batch when I think we will need it and with all the people here, we go through it pretty quickly. If you want to be on the safe side, you could also freeze it and then thaw it out when you want more. Hope that helps! :)

  2. What a wonderful alternative to store bought elderberry syrup, which as you say, is very expensive! I also prefer homemade because you know exactly what is in it. I've used elderberry syrup and found it did help me feel much better. Yours also looks like it tastes good too! On a preventative basis, we use echinacea. Thank you for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party.

    1. Agreed. I love being able to customize ingredients based on what our specific needs/wants are and also knowing what's in it. Echinacea is another good one!
