Luther Burger

Morsels of Life - Luther Burger

After hearing about the Luther Burger served at the NC State Fair last year, we've wanted to try making some! Well, with the recent Krispy Kreme opening in Philadelphia, we got a half dozen original glazed doughnuts free. After eating a few, we knew we had to make a Luther Burger. A Luther Burger, named after Luther Vandross, is like a bacon cheeseburger, but with more awesome added in. Oh, and a Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut replaces the typical sesame bun. The doughnut is sliced in half and slightly grilled to provide some texture and prevent too much sogginess. I also made the doughnut "inside out" for the burger so that the glaze could both provide a barrier to the sogginess from the burger as well as to make the Luther Burger easier and cleaner to hold and eat. This burger has the perfect blend of savory filling and sweet glaze. The part that surprised me the most was how ungreasy this Luther Burger was. While I wouldn't quite call this burger health food, I was expecting a hugely greasy (but tasty!) burger, but most fast food burgers feel more greasy and less tasty!

Materials:

Mass Weight Volume Number Material Notes
2 Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnuts, preferably warm and fresh
1/2 pound lean ground beef
1-2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
bacon
cheese

Methods:

  1. Combine beef and Worcestershire sauce and mix until well blended.
  2. Shape into two patties, leaving a small indentation in the center.
  3. Grill patties until desired level of "doneness" reached. I used a George Foreman grill, which I think helped with making the burger less greasy.
  4. Grill bacon until crispy, and doughnuts, cut side down, briefly.
  5. Assemble burger.
  6. Eat and enjoy.
