Frozen "Coke"

Morsels of Life - Frozen Coke

Hasn't everyone had an Icee or Slurpee or whatever your regional variant? While not the pinnacle of health food by a long shot, I still enjoy these drinks (is that even how they're categorized?) once in a while, so I thought about replicating it at home. I figured, if Omar Knedlik (that's the guy who invented Icee machines) got his idea when he left his sodas in the freezer too long, it couldn't be toooooo hard, right? Well, it's not so easy, actually. First, I tried using an ice cream maker, similar to how One Ordinary Day made Root Beer Sherbert (which is still on my "to make" list). Total Failure. All I got was really cold, flat soda. Not what I was going for. At all.

Try 2 - I froze some soda and figured out why Try 1 failed. Even after an overnight freeze, the soda cubes weren't frozen hard. I had forgotten abut sugar lowering the freezing point. But, since the soda cubes weren't frozen hard, I figure I would use it to my advantage and throw the cubes in a blender. That created a slush. Would this try be success? Not at all. When I tasted the slush, it lacked the carbonation present in store bought frozen cokes. Failure again.

And so, it was onto Try 3. Mix the thick slurry with chilled soda! You get a cold, drinkable slurry similar, but not identical to a frozen coke! Success at last.

Note: I'm still feeling a bit lonely, so if you don't mind, could you join me over on the sidebar? Thanks to those of you who have joined me!

A home made version of the ubiquitous Icee, Slurpee, slushie, etc.

Prep time:

5 minutes

Cook time: none

Total time:

5 minutes + freezing time

Yield:

2-3
servings

Materials:

  • 2x 12 ounce cans

    carbonated beverage
, chilled (I used Pepsi. You can also use something that's not carbonated, but then you can just throw everything into the blender right from the beginning.)

Methods:

  1. Freeze one can into soda cubes.

  2. Blend frozen soda cubes into slush, adding some of the chilled can if needed. (Don't add too much or you'll lose out on the carbonation.)

  3. Quickly mix slush with chilled drink.

  4. Serve and enjoy.

What's your favorite flavor?
